I think that it isn't necessarily discovery that is the thing you're missing out on. I think it's something else you've mentioned repeatedly in this issue: ownership. Ownership and the effect _that_ has on identity.
I don't disagree with this, but I also think they're connected. I find the ownership I feel comes from the means of discovery. Normally that discovery is via a friend, a record store clerk, article, etc. But the ownership comes from feeling like it was MY choice made from the information I had and not handed to me.
